Gain real-world community development experience in Tanzania, working alongside our local organisation supporting women affected by human trafficking, exploitation and gender-based violence while earning an accredited Global Citizenship Diploma.
Work alongside a Tanzanian organisation supporting women affected by human trafficking, exploitation, gender-based violence and other forms of vulnerability as they work towards safety, independence and a more secure future.
Your internship gives you the opportunity to understand women’s empowerment from a much deeper perspective. Depending on current needs and your background, you may support education, life skills, employability, small-business development, English, workshops and community initiatives, while learning from the local professionals who lead this work every day.
But sustainable empowerment goes beyond responding to immediate circumstances. Throughout your placement and Global Citizenship learning, you’ll explore some of the wider factors that can increase vulnerability to trafficking and exploitation, including poverty, economic dependence, gender inequality, limited educational opportunities and access to employment.
You’ll work alongside the local team rather than taking over specialist roles, with safeguarding, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries central to the experience. Through your Legacy Project, you’ll also collaborate on something identified as genuinely useful by the organisation — creating a longer-term contribution based around local priorities rather than short-term intervention.
Combined with your Global Citizenship Diploma, cultural learning and Academy experience, this is an opportunity to explore human trafficking, women’s empowerment and community development in a real-world East African context while developing a much deeper understanding of what responsible international engagement actually looks like.
Almost everything you need for your 6 or 12 weeks in Tanzania is built into your Adventure Academy fee.
A small number of personal and independent costs remain outside your Academy program.

Become increasingly involved in your internship as your confidence and understanding grow. Alongside your placement partner, you'll begin exploring real challenges and identifying where your Legacy Project could make a useful, sustainable contribution.
Hit the road for your first signature overland journey — travelling from Arusha into Ngorongoro Crater, across the Serengeti and west to Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria. Six days of safari, road trips, wildlife and adventure mark the halfway point of your Academy experience.
Return to your internship and turn ideas into action through your partner-led Legacy Project. Co-design, build, test and refine something your placement has identified as genuinely useful — learning firsthand what responsible, community-led impact actually looks like.
Your second overland journey takes you from Arusha through the Usambara Mountains to historic Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam before crossing the Indian Ocean to Zanzibar. Finish with four days experiencing island culture, adventure and beach life before returning home to Arusha.
Return to your internship to see how your project works without you, make final improvements and hand it over properly. Your final weeks in Arusha bring everything together through reflection, final placement days, Diploma completion, graduation and one last celebration with your Academy crew.

Working alongside women affected by human trafficking, exploitation and gender-based violence requires more than wanting to help. Through your placement and Academy learning, you’ll explore the wider factors that can contribute to vulnerability — including gender inequality, poverty, education, economic dependence and access to opportunity.
You’ll learn about safeguarding, ethical volunteering, cultural context, appropriate boundaries and community-led development, while working alongside the Tanzanian professionals who understand these issues firsthand. The goal isn’t to arrive with solutions. It’s to listen, learn, contribute your skills where they’re useful and strengthen work already being led locally.
Work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Community Development, connecting your placement experience with structured learning, reflection and ethical international engagement.

Your Legacy Project is developed collaboratively around something the local organisation identifies as genuinely useful. Depending on current priorities, this might involve educational resources, employability or business tools, awareness initiatives, workshops or another capacity-building project. The aim is to leave something useful behind rather than creating a project simply for the participant experience.
You'll learn about safeguarding, confidentiality, appropriate boundaries and cultural sensitivity before becoming more involved in the placement.
You’ll live at our staffed Academy home in Arusha and receive local orientation, ongoing support and guidance around transport, cultural expectations, nightlife and everyday safety.
